According to the early numbers, it looked like Book of Eli would overtake Avatar’s #1 spot. We all thought wrong. Avatar is #1 at the box office after winning Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director at the Golden Globe Awards last night. Avatar brought in another $54.6 million from Friday through Monday (bringing the international total earnings to $1.12 billion). The Denzel Washington film The Book of Eli earned $38 million.

The Golden Globes aired tonight and there were winners scattered among a variety of movies and TV series. A common theme of the award show was the global community we live in – it was clear that the people of Haiti were on everyone’s mind. Ricky Gervais hosted and ranged from funny to mildly offensive. Avatar did take home top honors for Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Director for James Cameron. Martin Scorsese was honored with the Cecile B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award. Sandra Bullock took home Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for The Blind Side. Meryl Streep was double nominated in the category Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical for her role in Julie & Julia and It’s Complicated. It was her role as Julia Child that won her the Golden Globe and she gave a truly touching and sincere acceptance speech – true class. Jeff Bridges won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in Crazy Heart. One of my favorite shows, Mad Men won for Best Television Series – Drama. Dexter also won big, with Michael C. Hall winning for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama and John Lithgow won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for his role as the Trinity Killer in the series. A surprise win for me was The Hangover, which was up against other big movies in the category Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.
Some of the fashion notables were: Chloë Sevigny (also a winner for her role in Big Love), Penélope Cruz, Heather Graham, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Garner, Chace Crawford, George Clooney, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Diane Kruger and Carey Mulligan.

Blake Lively, star of the show Gossip Girl, and the upcoming films The Town and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee covers the February Edition of Esquire Magazine. Blake Lively is one celebrity that I can’t seem to get enough of seeing. Perhaps it’s the long legs, the long blonde, disheveled hair, or the unbelievably perfect décolletage she frequently shows off in plunging necklines. She seems so normal, yet so perfect at the same time. Ok, back on topic- she is styled perfectly for her Esquire shoot. I love that they decided to depart from the big hair and lacy lingerie and instead gave her a retro-modern greaser look. The bold use of black, red and white really stands out and I adore the look of the handwritten headlines.

Michael C. Hall, the star of Showtime’s award nominated show, Dexter, announced to People.com that he has been battling cancer. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and has been receiving treatment and is now in remission. He will be attending the Golden Globe Awards tonight with his wife, Jennifer Carpenter, who plays his sister, Deb on Dexter. Hall is nominated for “Best Dramatic Actor” for his role as Dexter Morgan.
I love Dexter and I hope it brings home some awards tonight!

Denzel Washington’s new movie, The Book of Eli, looks like it will be the film to finally take Avatar’s #1 spot. On Friday, Eli raked in $11.7 million and Avatar brought in $10.5 million. The final numbers aren’t in yet. It will be interesting to see the response to The Book of Eli and see if it has the power to maintain the #1 spot next week. Is Eli on your ‘must see’ movie list?

George Clooney and MTV networks are busy preparing for a telethon airing on January 22nd to help Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake that struck on January 12th and has killed tens of thousands and leaves the island desperate for aid. The Telethon will air on MTV channels, NBC, ABC, HBO and CNN from 8-10 Eastern. This will be Clooney’s third telethon, and People.com details the money brought in by his past efforts. I’m hoping his recent effort will bring in millions to help the people of Haiti recover from this tragic natural disaster.
A friend of NecoleBitchie.com, Martine Cauthen, lives in Haiti and is posting updates on her experience. Martine is urging people to donate to the Baptist Haiti Mission.

Reps for Matt Kemp claim that he and Rihanna are only “friends”. I for one, also love vacations and ass grabbing with my closest friends. I also love attending sporting events with my friends – and that is precisely what Matt and Rihanna decided to do on Saturday, January 16th at the Los Angeles Clippers game.
An inside source was able to capture these shots while attending the game. Our insider says there was definitely affection – Rihanna’s hand was on Matt’s leg briefly, and our insider suspects someone sitting behind them was monitoring the PDA. Matt was texting throughout the game, and a lot of people were approaching the Dodger. They seemed to enjoy some laughs at the Clipper girls dancing to Rihanna. There were other Los Angeles elite at the game, including Billy Crystal and Charlie Sheen.
The Cavs defeated the Clippers 102 to 101.

The Critics Choice Awards aired Friday, January 15th on VH1. The show offered a lot of funny moments and was generally less stiff than awards shows aired on major networks. VH1 will be re-airing the show, so if you missed it, you can always catch a repeat. One of the standout winners was the movie, The Hurt Locker, which took home Best Picture and Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow). I recently watched The Hurt Locker and was utterly moved by the realness of the film and its portrayal of life as a soldier in Iraq. Other winners:
Best Actor: Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
Best Actress: Tie – Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side and Meryl Streep, Julie and Julia
Best Acting Ensemble: Inglorious Basterds
Best Documentary Feature: The Cove
